Diver Captures Amazing Footage Of A Seahorse Giving Birth To Hundreds Of Babies

When a male seahorse and a female seahorse mate, the female seahorse deposits around 1,500 eggs into the pouches that the male ones have. In this pouch, the male seahorse carries the offspring till they’re fully developed. The time period that the males carry the eggs in their brood pouches may range from 9 to 45 days. After that, hundreds of tiny seahorse babies come out of the brood pouch. A couple of divers that were conducting a study on seahorses were fortunate enough to capture this incredible footage. In the video, we can see how a heavily pregnant male gives birth to a bunch of little seahorses.

The incredible footage was taken by Meagan Abele and Clayton Manning. When they came across the once-in-a-lifetime footage, the duo was studying seahorses in the ocean waters of Port Stephens, Australia. It’s not unusual to see videos of this kind. However, this is the first one to be captured in the wild. When the seahorse was giving birth, the divers were already on their fourth dive. Luckily, they were able to be at the right place at the perfect time.

About her experience, Meagen Clayton states that being able to be part of such a rare thing is very cool. She also revealed that after they were done filming the birth of hundreds of seahorses, she high-fived her research assistant and went to the surface. Both Clayton and Abele were really happy because they got the opportunity to witness such a rare incident with their own eyes.
