Throughout history, people were extremely amazed by mythical creatures like dragons. Legends about them fascinated humans for millions of years, and such creatures are featured in so many movies as well. Unfortunately, no matter how much they interest us, dragons aren’t real. However, nature has an equally fascinating alternative for all the dragon-lovers. It is not an exaggeration to say that these creatures look like they’re straight out of a fairytale.
These animals are quite similar to dragons in shape but are comparatively very small in size. In spite of that, they do resemble the dragons in our imagination to a great extent.
These wonderful creatures belong to the genus ‘Draco’ and are known as flying dragons. Flying dragons belong to the Agamidae family of lizards. Their common habitats are the trees of the Southeast Asian tropical forests.
Flying dragons grow up to a length of 8-10 inches.
They can glide from one tree to the other thanks to their trunks. On either side of their trunk, membranes can be seen. Flying dragons have the ability to reach up to 60 meters in altitude. They mostly feed on insects and tree ants.
When the need for reproduction comes up, these creatures come down from the trees. First, the male lures the female by folding his membranes. Then, to lay 4-5 eggs, the female digs a small hole in the ground. Next, she covers the tiny hole with soil and leaves. Soon after 24 hours, the female animal leaves the eggs alone and goes back to the trees.
Both the characteristics and colors of these creatures differ according to the species. However, all of them possess adaptations that are unique to them.
These amazing creatures surely add immense beauty to the environment. So, let us know your thoughts about these incredible animals in the comments!
