In the wild, the female orangutan does 100% of the upbringing of the offspring, and the male orangutan has no direct involvement in it. Orangutan mothers raise their kids with so much love. Needless to say, the bond between an orangutan mother and the baby is identified as one of the strongest in nature. Not only do orangutan mothers raise their kids single-handedly, but they also invest the most time in each offspring than any other species.

After an unexpected turn of events, 2-year-old orangutan Cerah’s mother lost her life last month, at the Denver Zoo. However, something even more unexpected happened at the loss of Cerah’s mother. Berani, Cerah’s dad, has fully taken up the upbringing of his daughter. He is doing his best to become the best dad for his daughter, which is simply amazing! Such a thing is rarely seen in nature, and all the staff members were completely astonished by this.

Two days ago, a couple of zookeepers wrote on Facebook: “Cerah couldn’t have asked for a better dad.” They stated that Berani is very attentive and protective of Cerah and that he looks into all of her needs.

Since orangutan dads are never involved in the offspring’s upbringing, Berani is indeed special. Carlie McGuire, the Public Relations Coordinator at the Denver Zoo, stated that Berani has always been an exception to the typical role of a male orangutan.

According to Carlie, Cerah’s mother Nias has another daughter named Hesty. However, Berani is not Hesty’s biological father. But, Berani always treated Hesty like his own daughter, which is truly heartwarming. Therefore, it’s not a surprise that Berani has stepped up to take care of Cerah. He further stated that Berani is a great source of comfort for Cerah.

“The whole troop is doing well, and 11-year-old Hesty, who is only a few years away from being able to start having her own children, is doing a good job playing with Cerah throughout the day”, added Carlie.

Despite having some wonderful maternal instincts that make him a very special dad, Berani will never be able to replace Nias. According to Carlie, Nias was a true leader in this orangutan family, and she can never be replaced. He further added that since Cerah is almost of age to be independent, she’s not in need of a surrogate mother.

Nias is a 32-year-old Sumatran orangutan mother, and she passed away on December 17 at the Denver Zoo, Colorado. Even zoo officials are puzzled by her sudden loss, and they are currently awaiting necropsy results from Colorado State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical Services.

Nias became a part of the Denver zoo in 2005 when she was aged 17. For the last 15 years, so many guests were fascinated by her. She also served as an ambassador for her critically endangered species. Sumatran orangutans are on the edge of extinction due to the rapid destruction of Sumatra’s forests, which is very unfortunate. At the present, there are fewer than 14,000 Sumatran orangutans in the wild.
