These birds are originally from China. They were bought over by Mandarins in the 20th century. However, some of these birds managed to escape, forming their own colony. As a result, Mandarin duck populations were cultivated in Britain and many other parts of the world. In present, these striking birds can be commonly found in their native East Asia and the UK. These colorful birds have a red beak, an orange face, and a white crescent over their eyes, and whiskers. Their purple-colored chest lies in the middle of bronze sides. On their back is blue-colored back lies a couple of orange ‘sails’. This wonderful color combination is only seen in male birds. The female birds have a much duller combination of grey and white.
Mandarin ducks were introduced to the west by accident, and they don’t have any natural predators there. Therefore, many feared that they may become invasive. They commonly live and breed in dense and shrubby areas. They can be spotted in high altitudes and valleys too. However, if they have access to fresh water, they prefer lower altitudes.
