Some animals in this world are truly rare. However, even they can’t fully escape being hurt by other animals or fellow humans. This makes it really difficult to protect them. Therefore, in order to create a suitable environment for them and to ensure their safety, some people go out of their way, which is truly admirable. This is also such a story, where the only remaining albino orangutan got her very own island to live safely.
There’s only one albino orangutan in the world who’s currently alive. Her name is Alba, and as the result of a rare genetic disorder, she’s on the verge of extinction. Needless to say, among all the other orangutans, Alba is a very special and unique one.
From now onwards, Alba can live safely without any fear of being harmed by others. Her very own island sanctuary is located in Borneo.
Alba has a white coat. This color is the result of a rare genetic condition called albinism. Albinism is the result of having little to no production of melanin in the body. Melanin is the pigment that determines the hair color, skin color, eye color, etc of animals. In wildlife, the rate of occurrence of albinism is estimated from 1 in 20,000 to 1 in 1 million. As a result of the fully white coat, there’s a higher chance for albino animals to be subjected to prey. On the other hand, it’s also relatively more difficult for an albino predator to approach its prey.
