The truth is, these ‘perfect’ photos take lots of effort behind the scenes. Professional lighting, correct posing, extreme work-outs prior to photoshoots, getting implants, countless pictures before selecting the right one, photo-editing, etc. are some of them. When done right, anyone can turn into a social media model or fitness blogger. However, this is a fake perception of reality and such highly unachievable looks put lots of pressure on women.
The #NormalizeNormalBodies movement on Instagram and TikTok aims to celebrate normal and realistic bodies that don’t get enough recognition online. The trend was started by Mik Zazon.
The UK Addiction Treatment Group had more to say about unrealistic body standards and how this affects the mental health of women. According to Nuno Albuquerque, the Head of Treatment for the UKAT Group, especially young adults and children are negatively affected by such ‘perfect’ social media images.
He explained that when such pics are continuously promoted, an obsession for perfection might develop in women. This can lead to psychological disorders resulting in the eating disorder Anorexia Nervosa. Experts say that loving and accepting oneself comes from within. However, it’s very much influenced by the environment. In that sense, each and every one of us is partly responsible for the way some people feel about themselves. Albuquerque also stated that every person in society should contribute to creating an environment where self-love and support are encouraged. For this, all body types, shapes, colors, and sizes should be promoted.
Similar to a number of recent beauty trends, the ‘Normalize Normal Bodies’ movement is all about dismissing digital illusions and embracing reality. Loving and accepting yourself can be very challenging to many people. But once you start to love yourself, you will become very confident about yourself. And in turn, confidence improves our life a lot.
The #NormalizeNormalBodies movement is not only very individualistic, but it’s also very unifying. No matter how different our bodies are, everyone has a different understanding of ‘normal’. But at the same time, all these unique women posting under #NormalizeNormalBodies create a sense of community and togetherness.
